Meth harmful in pregnancy

August 2, 2010 |16:36 | Issues  By : Team X

New research shows that babies born to methamphetamine-using moms face much higher risks of serious complications, compared to babies not exposed in the womb to this illegal street drug. Life-threatening pregnancy complications, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, are also more common among women who use methamphetamine while pregnant, the researchers found.

Methamphetamine, also called meth, is a highly addictive stimulant that users inject, snort, smoke or swallow. A form called crystal meth looks like fragments of glass and is smoked using a glass pipe like those used to smoke crack cocaine.

Methamphetamine use among US women continues to be a serious problem. A recent study found that over the last 15 years, methamphetamine abuse has become the most common reason for pregnant women to seek drug counseling.

Researchers say pregnant mothers should be given vitamin D

July 6, 2010 |17:22 | Issues | Symptoms | Tips  By : Team X

The authors argue that despite a growing body of evidence that links vitamin D deficiency to complications in pregnancy and poor neonatal health, the UK remains the only one of 31 European countries that doesn’t have a set vitamin D recommendation for women of reproductive age, while also failing to endorse a daily supplement to expectant mothers.

Co-author Dr Elina Hyppönen, a reader in epidemiology and public health at the ICH, said: "The incidence of vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women in Britain is unacceptably high, especially during winter and spring. This is compounded by a lack of exposure to sunlight and the limitations of an average diet to meet the optimal need.

Alcohol in pregnancy may harm sons sperm - Study

June 29, 2010 |19:10 | Issues | Symptoms  By : Team X

Mothers who drink alcohol during pregnancy may be damaging the fertility of their future sons, a study by Danish scientists said on Tuesday. The researchers found that if mothers had drunk 4.5 or more drinks a week while pregnant, the sperm concentration of their sons -- measured about 20 years later -- was a third lower than in men who were not exposed to alcohol while in the womb.

The study by scientists at the University of Aarhus in Denmark was presented at the conference of European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology in Rome. A drink was measured as 12 grams of alcohol, equivalent to one 330 ml can of beer, one small (120 ml) glass of wine or one shot (40 ml) of spirits.

Our study shows that there is an association between drinking a moderate amount of alcohol during pregnancy and lower sperm concentrations in sons," said Cecilia of Aarhus's department of occupational medicine, who led the research.

Pregnancy cigs test sends right smoke signal

June 26, 2010 |17:39 | Issues | Symptoms  By : Team X

Some of them look guilty, averting their eyes when people stare. It's a pathetic and sad sight. Others are more defiant, inhaling the toxic smoke as if their lives depend on it. But one thing's for sure. Pregnant women who smoke make me feel sick and mildly depressed.

Seeing an expectant woman in her dressing gown and slippers suck on a smoke is beyond pathetic when it's impossible to escape the gruesome images of the dangers of cigarettes. So, I'm all for the British plan to test every pregnant woman for smoking.

That's right. During the week, the British Government's health watchdog called for all pregnant women to be breath-tested for carbon monoxide to determine whether they smoked or were exposed to too much second-hand smoke.
