A pregnant 34-year-old driver and her eight-year-old daughter survived a crash that left their car jammed under a tractor-trailer north of the village of Metcalfe on Wednesday evening.
Just before 8:30 p.m., firefighters were called to the scene on Yorks Corners Road, where they worked to extricate the mother and daughter from under the side of the trailer portion of the transport. A release from Ottawa Paramedics said the woman had been “trapped under the crushed dash of the family vehicle,” which firefighters identified as a PT Cruiser.
“When firefighters arrived, the PT Cruiser’s front end was underneath the trailer up to the roof line,” the fire department release said. “Firefighters had to remove the entire driver’s side, including both doors to extricate the female driver, using hydraulic rescue tools. The daughter did not require extrication.”
When the woman was freed from the vehicle, paramedics treated her for arm injuries and assessed her for possible complications to her pregnancy. The daughter, who had been seated in the back, reported chest discomfort. They were taken to Ottawa hospitals in stable condition.
